Much of life is very real. When it is too real, joy can be hard to find, to hold. I create work to connect to bits of joy. Each piece begins in a warm bath of water and paper pulp. Using time honored paper making tools, the pulp is pulled from the water and formed into a sheet of paper. Once dry, each sheet is individually saturated with color, colors inspired by my places: the bold palette of Southern California, greens and blues of the Pacific Northwest, stark grays of New York City. Each piece is unique — chaos and all. The work is found in private collections in Canada and the United States.
Born in Vancouver, BC, I grew up in Southern California, returned to Canada for university, and 1989 I moved to New York City. I studied at the Arts Students League and later earned my MA in painting from New York University.
I seek to create work that brings a moment of joy — when you see it, hold it, live with it. If this happens, I have done my job.
